Find Out If You May Be a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery

Surgeon focused during a medical procedure, wearing protective gear.

Body Mass Index or BMI

BMI is one of the primary tools we use to evaluate whether a patient may benefit from bariatric surgery. It is not a perfect measure, but when combined with your medical history, current health conditions, and weight loss goals, it gives us a clear starting point for your evaluation.

Use the calculator below to find your BMI. Then read what your result means and whether bariatric surgery may be worth exploring.

We believe that each patient is unique and deserves a personalized treatment plan. Our practice is to  take the time to listen to your concerns and develop a plan tailored to your needs.

What Does Your BMI Mean?

Additional Information

BMI Is a Starting Point — Not the Whole Picture

At our practice, we begin considering weight loss surgery for patients with a BMI above 30. But BMI alone does not determine whether surgery is the right choice. Dr. Rodriguez evaluates each patient individually, taking into account:

•  The presence of obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or joint disease

•  Previous weight loss attempts — most of our patients have tried at least one other approach without lasting success

•  Muscle mass and body composition, which BMI alone does not reflect

•  Personal goals, lifestyle, and readiness for a surgical or endoscopic procedure

A patient with a BMI of 33 and type 2 diabetes may be a stronger candidate than a patient with a BMI of 38 and no health complications. The number matters — but so does everything around it.

What Procedure Might Be Right for My BMI?

As a general guide — though every case is different:

•  BMI 30 – 35: The Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is often the first recommendation. No incisions, faster recovery, starting at $9,800.

•  BMI 35 – 40: The ESG or Gastric Sleeve (LSG) depending on health history and goals. Patients with diabetes or hypertension  may benefit more from the sleeve.

•  BMI 40+: The Gastric Sleeve or Mini Gastric Bypass are typically the strongest options for durable, long-term weight loss. We can often have surgery scheduled within 2 to 4 weeks.

Not sure which applies to you? That is exactly what your consultation is for.

How Quickly Can I Get Surgery?

Our focused pre-operative process gets most patients surgery-ready in just 2 to 4 weeks — far faster than the months-long timelines common at other practices. We have found there is no clinical advantage to prolonged waiting, and that acting while motivated produces better outcomes.

All procedures are performed as same-day surgery. You go home the day of your procedure.
