Candidate for bariatric surgery?
Qualifying for bariatric surgery is about more than a number on a scale. Here is how we decide together whether it is the right step for you.
Hear It Directly From Dr. Rodríguez
In this video, I walk you through the parameters we genuinely use. Whether bariatric surgery is right for you is not settled by a calculator. It is settled between you and me, with your history on the table in front of us.
Watch it before you run your numbers through an online tool. Your medical conditions, your previous attempts, the habits you actually keep, and what you want the next decade to look like all carry weight in this decision.
- What we look at beyond your BMI
- Why the conversation matters more than the scale
- How your health conditions shape the recommendation
- What to expect when you come in for your consultation
Do You Qualify For Bariatric Surgery?
You May Be A Strong Candidate If
- Your BMI is 40 or higher
- Your BMI is 35–39 with a weight-related health condition
- You have type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure or joint pain linked to your weight
- You have tried supervised diet and exercise plans without lasting results
- You are ready to commit to long-term lifestyle and nutrition changes
A Different Approach May Suit You Better If
- Your BMI is below 30 and your weight is stable
- You have 20–40 pounds to lose and prefer a non-surgical option
- You want a procedure with no incisions and a faster return to routine
- You have a medical condition that makes surgery higher risk right now
- You are not yet in a position to follow the post-operative plan
Ready when you are.
Whether you qualify takes one appointment to establish, not months of guessing. Bring your history, give us an hour, and leave knowing whether surgery is the right route and which version of it fits you.
How We Decide Together
Consultation
We sit down and go through your weight history, the conditions you are managing and what you actually want from a procedure. Nothing is recommended until we understand where you are starting from.
Medical Review
We read your records, your medication list, and anything that changes the risk picture. This is the stage where candidacy for bariatric surgery is either confirmed or a safer route is identified.
Personalised Plan
Dr. Rodriguez sets out the approach that suits your anatomy and your goals, and explains the reasoning. You hear the compromises alongside the benefits, not instead of them.
Your Decision
You take as long as you need. When you are ready, we book the date and prepare you properly, including everything that has to be sorted before the day itself.
Follow-up
Vitamin monitoring, scheduled labs, and telehealth reviews. The months after your procedure shape the outcome every bit as much as the operation does.

Questions About Qualifying
Is BMI the only thing that matters?
No, and treating it that way is how people end up with the wrong procedure. BMI is where the conversation opens. Here at South Florida Bariatrics, we weigh your health conditions, your weight history, what you have already attempted, and what you want out of the next ten years alongside it. Two patients with an identical BMI can walk out with two completely different plans.
What if my BMI is below the usual range?
You still have options with us. Patients sitting between a BMI of 28 and 36 are frequently better served by endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, which involves no incisions and removes no stomach tissue. Come in and let us assess you properly rather than ruling yourself out on the strength of an online calculator.
Do I need a referral to book a consultation?
You do not. Call our office directly on (561) 829-7982, and we will find you a time. If your insurer or your primary care physician wants documentation afterward, we will put it together for you without any fuss.
How long does the consultation take?
Set aside about an hour for the first visit. That covers your weight history, a review of your records, an examination, and enough time for Dr. Rodriguez to explain his thinking and answer whatever you bring. We would far rather run over than send you home still unsure.
What should I bring to my first visit?
A list of your current medications, any recent labs or imaging, and notes on the diets or programs you have already worked through. If you have had a previous weight loss procedure, bring those records too. The more we have in front of us, the more specific our answer can be on the day.
Better yet, see us in person!
We love our customers, so feel free to visit during normal business hours.
